Thangu is about 27 kilometers from Lachen. It takes more than an hour to cover this short distance due to the high damage of the road and regular landslides, also making maintenance a problem. From Gangtok Lachen is about 6 to 7 hours drive. Most tourists stay overnight at Lachen and visit Thangu on their way to the more famous Gurudongmar Lake visit.

The stretch from Lachen with its rough roads and changing terrain sounds challenging but also adds to the whole high-altitude experience. Places like this remind you how remote and dramatic the landscape of Sikkim actually is.
